This week’s Top 5 HøFList is particularly close to my heart. Earlier this year I went on an open water swimming holiday with SwimQuest in Thailand (photo above). In the run up to the trip, I was training around 10km a week in the pool and getting through swimsuits at a rate of knots.
Anyone reading this will know that swimwear when you’re tall is a nightmare. It’s not so much about getting a swimsuit that looks great, it’s about finding one that doesn’t cut you in half. To add to this challenge, when you’re swimming long distances in the sea, poor fit means chafing. Trust me, it’s not nice.
Here are my top tips for the best tall-friendly swimwear out there, with a heavy bias towards styles which allow you to swim long distance freestyle.
HøFSisters Top 5:
Hunkemoller HKMX Sport is my swimsuit range of choice when training long distance. Amazingly comfortable and no chaffing at all, even over swims of an hour or more. They do have a very high leg cut, something to be aware of if good coverage is desired. I am 6’1 and this fit is just right, if you are taller with a particularly long torso, opt for below.
Sweaty Betty is the only range I will use for 2 piece training swimwear. This company is growing from strength to strength as a result of its bang on trend designs which are flattering, functional and fun. HøFSisters can’t get enough of their neon pops. Top tip: only chose the two piece designs with thick, close-fitting waistbands for the bottom half to make sure they don’t drag and slow you down. I bought their Dive In Bikini, which is STUNNING, but the elastic on the bottom half is too narrow for serious swimming. Go for the Offshore Training Bikini instead (pictured above).
Esprit is the second Dutch brand in our HøFList. I have heard from many tall women that their swimsuits are generous with torso length. My shelve of swimming goodies includes this one which is perfect for short-mid distance training. It is comfortable and attractive, however, for me, doesn’t quite have the snug fit of the HKMX swimsuit for more intense training, owing to the low cut back.
J.Crew is a tall woman’s friend. Shoes, fashion, swimwear, you name it. There are a range of longer torso swimsuits but this one is the best for swim training. The icing on the cake is that it comes in a range of colours, the bright red is my fave #Baywatch.
Long Tall Sally – I must admit to not having personally tried this swimsuit on but if the reviews are anything to go by we’re in for a winner and I am LOVING the neon pop design so will definitely be giving it a go!
Now – I have a favour to ask. Can anyone recommend the perfect pair of swimming goggles that don’t fog up, leak or leave me with racoon eyes?
