I love Monsters Inc. There is nothing quite like a rainy Sunday afternoon ensconced on the sofa watching James P. “Sully” Sullivan and the cycloptic Mike Wazowski trying to smuggle a human child across the wardrobe border. There are many wonderful analogies, morals and subliminal messages to be taken away from this animated film; for example, that fearing the unknown is foolish. However, there is one thing that gets me without fail whenever I watch Monsters Inc. How AMAZING does monster fur look?
Clearly it would be unethical to wear real monster fur. So you can imagine my joy to discover faux monster fur jackets during one of my recent visits to the ever-fascinating Question Air in Wimbledon. Not just one, but two styles. I didn’t care what Zoe thought, HøFSisters would be in matching monster jackets.
Monster fur can be quite bulky, so when styling it’s important to keep a slim silhouette on the bottom half. Zo and I both opted for our Goldsign Lure Jeans – mine a few years old, denim coated with a very faint animal print, and Zoe’s the latest Ashland faded grey. Goldsign are the “Rolls Royce” of denim I am told by the lovely staff in Question Air, and HøFSisters have to agree. They are unbelievably comfortable with just the right amount of stretch (check out our HøF Top 5 Skinnies). Although this comes at a price – similar to that of a Rolls Royce, in fact.
Underneath monster fur you want to keep it plain and neutral in colour – let the coat do the talking. You could opt for a high necked blouse, like this one from By Malene Birger or this sleeveless one from Reiss. Zoe and I opted for little silk camisole tops, which are surprisingly hard to find at this time of year. After failing to find them at all of the usual suspects, we finally came across cami’s in an array of colours in Intimissimi.
Ankle boots work well but if you wanted to dress it all up, a pair of pointed heels, again in a neutral colour, would be perfect. Style with a simple long necklace and a handbag with a thin strap that sits in the fur rather than flattening it. Zo opted for her loyal J.Crew Signet bag and I wore this rather lovely (and great value) leather bag from Mango. The result is a rather cohesive, sophisticated monster look.
As for Sisters Inc., I can’t speak for Zo, but my Unreal Fur jacket burns a hole in my wardrobe. Every time I open the doors, there is Sully beckoning to me.
Come over to the other side.
