If you have ever been to Brook Green, you will know that it is quite a wonderful little haven in West London. Traffic is scarce, the rabbit warren of one way roads terrifying even the most knowledgeable cabbies. There are great pubs, including my favourite (and current office), The Havelock Tavern, and The Bird In Hand, famous for its pizzas (and powerful smell of truffles). Also a handful of restaurant gems, including an unexciting looking but mouthwateringly good Popeseye – home of “the best steak in London” – and Pentolina, an Italian restaurant set up by the wonderful Heidi and Michele, who used to live in the flat above mine, suffering many an afterparty in stoic silence before sensibly moving a few streets away.
Now we also have a great reason to get up on a Saturday morning – a fantastic Wild Food Market in the local school playground. When friends and I are hungover, we’ll meet there for a pork belly, sausage, bacon jam, cheese and egg muffin from Muffin Man & Co and a Bloody Mary from Bold Spirits. It’s a happy, smily, sociable place where we while away the hours, debriefing on the night before and people watching. Zo and I love going there for a coffee or a sharpener before heading off to the rest of our weekends. So on a drizzly Saturday, we thought it would be nice to capture our relaxed denim weekend style around the hood – HøFs in the wild, if you like.
Zoe’s beautiful wide leg jeans are by Red Valentino, discovered during one of our favourite times of year, The Shop At Bluebird sale. Mostly too expensive for us mortals during the rest of the year, when this sale comes round it’s time to jump on that investment piece. Sadly, as with the best sale finds these jeans sold out quickly, but you can find very similar styles from MiH, ASOS and Donna Ida. Wide leg cropped denim looks best on long legs, and pairing them with kitten or block heels (like these from ASOS) creates a flattering silhouette on the lower half. This chunky knit from Danish brand Gestuz in a deep burgundy colour is absolutely on trend in AW16/17 – you can buy it in roll neck or O neck, as shown here – and perfectly complements the pale pink ASOS shoes and Coccinelle bag.
I opted for a pair of comfy 1969 girlfriend jeans from GAP, which helpfully have the option of a Tall leg length so they’re not cropped too high. For a casual weekend look, I wore an oversized shirt from Gestuz layered under a cropped chunky roll neck jumper from & Other Stories (super long sleeves) and these very fun block heels from L.K.Bennett. The bag is another winner from Accessorize, and if you’re asking us, looks rather like that classic cross body Signet bag from J.Crew, only an awful lot cheaper.
So, if you are ever in Brook Green on a Saturday between 10-3, be sure to go to the market and have a cocktail (or just a coffee and Bad Ass Cake) because we always leave with a smile on our faces, having seen old friends, made new friends and with a very full tummy.
