This weather is making me nostalgic for the endless school summer holidays of my youth. When I reminisce with my siblings, it was always sunny; a memory bias of sorts, our minds conveniently deleting the days we were trapped indoors by the relentless British drizzle. When the sun shone we would roll a long piece of blue plastic down the slope in front of the house, run a hosepipe on it and throw ourselves down – headfirst, feet first, any way possible – always ending up covered in bruises and grass burn but with enormous smiles on our faces. The simple pleasures of youth. The days before computer games and mobile phones. The good old days.
A Pompom Bag To Cure Nostalgia
Perhaps it was the nostalgia that drew me to this pompom bag from Next. It’s carefree, childish vibe drawing on my Peter Pan heartstrings. Pompoms are on trend in SS17 (read about these trends here), perhaps the ultimate fad, but one that makes me smile and which will have longevity in my festival drawer. Pompoms can be found on a multitude of blouses and kaftans, as well as handbags, earrings and shawls. It seemed the perfect lighthearted complement to this minimalist urban summer look.
A Versatile A-Line Skirt
The A-line skirt is from Reiss (same style here – it’s in the sale) and it’s worked hard over the years. When I had an office job it was the ultimate workhorse, never creasing or looking dirty, and transitioning the seasons effortlessly with the addition/removal of tights. My workwear retired a while back so I enjoyed getting it out again, this time in a more casual style, with the addition of a cute Skylar t-shirt from Baukjen. The founder of Baukjen is Dutch so it is a fantastic place to shop for long limbs. This t-shirt is in the sale at the moment and a steal at £35 so well worth taking a look.
Hot on the tails of the pyjama trend, we are now officially allowed to wear another bedroom staple, the humble slipper. Every high street retailer is selling slides in a multitude of colours and fabrics. They’re extremely comfortable and super fun, and I just love this fluffy pair from River Island. Whoever thought that one day we’d actually be able to wear our slippers to work? Well, in theory at least. For now, I’m just enjoying wearing them in the sunshine.
