Now that we are in deep midwinter, submerged in freezing fog and beset with January blues, we need to bring a bit of lighthearted whimsy back into our lives. We need to find little ways of lightening the mood and raising our spirits just enough to sail through these chilly months. If you are sticking to a strict diet, denying yourself alcohol, paying off Christmas debts, or all of the above, it may feel like this is a tricky thing to do. But, here at HøF headquarters, we love a challenge, and there’s nothing better than bringing a smile to people’s faces without taking a load off their wallets.
So, as a quick and affordable pick-me-up, we’d like to suggest you get your hands on this navy print sweater from Next. What could be more instantly uplifting than sporting several dozen pink sparkly flamingoes on your person? And all at the princely sum of £30. It may not be suitable workwear (though it would make the office a much cheerier place), but it’s shouting out to be taken on a cosy midweek date with friends. Watch the mood lighten as you arrive with your flock of fancy flamingoes – January blues be gone!
For this occasion, I countered the whimsy with a mid length denim skirt from Gestuz, and Hannah’s over the knee suede L.K.Bennett boots. On the whole I am rarely seen in a skirt, unless it’s a mini paired with opaque tights, and I have struggled with the current trend for mid length styles. But pairing them with thigh high boots seems to be the answer. A flash of skin prevents the outfit from falling into dowdy territory, and, simply put, these boots are the most luxurious items I’ve ever walked around in.
Throw on a big chunky scarf and grab a soft hobo bag, like this one from Russell & Bromley, and this has to be the cosiest outfit in town. In fact, perfect for a midweek trip to the Olympic cinema in Barnes. ‘La La Land’ on the big screen, and a glass of wine in my hand….? A fail-safe January rescue remedy in my book!
