I have mixed feelings about autumn. For all it’s golden, leaf-strewn beauty and the excitement that comes with the turning of a season, it’s tinged with sadness. I mourn the passing of another summer; especially when it’s been a good one (thank you, weather Gods!) The family collectively emerges from under the comfort blanket of the school holidays and sets off on the hair-raising rollercoaster of a new academic year.
And let’s not mention the spiders, of all sizes and persuasions, which decide it’s time to move indoors in droves. Not ideal in my arachnophobic household.
As a minor aside, there are also some tricky pitfalls to negotiate when it comes to autumnal dressing. Namely the problematic combination of chilly mornings and temperate afternoons. Cold early starts call for roll-neck jumpers and winter coats, but by mid-afternoon we are feeling like overcooked, boil-in-the-bag chicken.
So, what’s the answer? Well my advice would be to invest in a big old cardigan; they provide essential quick ventilation for those hot flush moments. This striking Patrizia Pepe mohair cardigan (cardicoat, coatigan?) really shouted at us from the rails of Sub Couture, in Notting Hill. It’s perfect for tall girls; to the floor on my 6ft frame with lovely, long sleeves and wide stripes which create an optical illusion, playing down height. At the first sign of that lingering warmth from the autumnal sun, push the sleeves back and let it slip off your shoulders – the perfect solution to the dilemma of hot/cold autumnal dressing without lugging around a coat.
The cardigan has a Dr. Seuss-like quality that I can’t quite put my finger on, but might have something to do with The Cat in the Hat. In any case, when you put it on you feel… you’re off to Great Places! Today is your day!……..In fact, if you’re looking for positivity, you can’t do better than an injection of Dr. Seuss.
What you wear underneath is almost irrelevant, though I’d suggest sticking to a paired back option as I have. Black jeans like this super-comfy Dr Denim pair and a vest top (this one is Theory, but Splendid also do great long length basics) leave the cardigan to do all the shouting. While these sparkly Jimmy Choo Miami trainers also work wonders for soothing the soul and putting a spring in your step.
Happy Autumn, everyone!
